Valueless Knowledge-Commodities and Financialization

Abstract: We present a Marxian theory of the capitalist production of knowledge and of financialization as two processes subsumed under the principle of autonomization of capital. Our approach consists of three tasks. The first is to develop the principle of autonomization. The second is to show how financialization can be a misleading term. The third is to develop a new theory of the production and distribution of valueless knowledgecommodities and knowledge-rent. Our Marxian framework demonstrates how the autonomizati… Show more

“…The case can safely be made that IPRs account for a significant part – but not all – of the increase in the intangible assets of pharmaceutical companies. It is worth noting that although IPRs generate rent income and are subject to speculation, they are statutory creatures based on state guarantees and not financial assets (Texeira and Rotta, 2012). “…As knowledge is systematically turned into intangible assets, the technological forerunner will keep on garnering intellectual, technoscientific or knowledge rents (Birch, 2019; Durand and Milberg, 2020; Foley, 2013; Pagano, 2014; Rikap, 2018; Teixeira and Rotta, 2012). Assetization excludes others from accessing knowledge.…”

“…Rents accrue to the owners of resources not reproducible by labor, therefore valueless, such as urban and rural land, patented information, and licensed knowledge (Teixeira and Rotta, 2012). Unlike interest, rents appear when valueless resources are traded, leased, or licensed.…”
