Value Sensitive Design to Achieve the UN SDGs with AI: A Case of Elderly Care Robots

Abstract: Healthcare is becoming increasingly automated with the development and deployment of care robots. There are many benefits to care robots but they also pose many challenging ethical issues. This paper takes care robots for the elderly as the subject of analysis, building on previous literature in the domain of the ethics and design of care robots. Using the value sensitive design (VSD) approach to technology design, this paper extends its application to care robots by integrating the values of care, values that… Show more

“…van Wynsberghe’s CCVSD makes major strides in translating care ethics into a practical framework and has subsequently been taken up by other technology researchers focused mostly on care robots ( Poulsen & Burmeister, 2019 ; Umbrello et al, 2021 ). However, CCVSD draws on a specific selection of care ethics literature with the explicate intention to create a design methodology, often with a focus on care robots.…”

“…Building on Tronto's work, CCVSD provides a framework so that the values of attentiveness, responsibility, competency, and responsiveness can guide the evaluation and design of robots (Van Wynsberghe, 2013). van Wynsberghe's CCVSD makes major strides in translating care ethics into a practical framework and has subsequently been taken up by other technology researchers focused mostly on care robots ( Poulsen & Burmeister, 2019;Umbrello et al, 2021). “…22 Safe and effective implementation of ethical considerations into devices and their use may be achieved by embedding ethical values in the total product life-cycle. Targets in development are intended use, requirements, design, and architecture (48,49). Various approaches comprise integrating ethics in structures and processes in development (50), embedding micro-ethics and virtues into data science (51) and enforcing ethical safety and trust by improving regulation (52).…”

“…Umbrello et al put designing technology for human values at the top of the value quest, effectively participating in the traditional path of designing for the values of minority actors [63]. Umbrello et al claim autonomy and vulnerability are the two crucial issues to be discussed for the receiver; however, the VSD-AI4SG achieves autonomy based on the premise that human autonomy is the "balance" between the possibility of choice and delegation of decision-making, with the key value pursuit being to "promote autonomy".…”

“…Umbrello and van de Poel discussed how in under-supervised or unsupervised learning, the ethical bias can be eliminated either by removing the potential variable or by eliminating the proxy variable, but these bias-eliminating strategies adopted in the machine-learning process can still leave the designer unable to predict the machine's possible problems and may also expose users to algorithmic black-boxes and generate distrust. Fairness and explicability are targeted solutions to these two problems [63]. However, an apparent difference between CCVSDs and the traditional VSD approach stems from the addition of AI as an autonomous factor.…”
