Value of XML in the implementation of clinical practice guidelines - the issue of content retrieval and presentation

Abstract: The purpose of guidelines in clinical practice is to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of clinical care. It is known that nationally or internationally produced guidelines which, in particular, do not involve medical processes at the time of consultation, do not take local factors into account, and have no consistent implementation strategy, have limited impact in changing either the behaviour of physicians, or patterns of care. The literature provides evidence for the effectiveness of computerization o… Show more

“…By means of the DTD (or XML schema) independent groups of people can agree to use a common format for interchanging data, verify the validity of either received or own data and provide an application-independent way of sharing and exchanging information. As a consequence, XML documents have proved to be highly portable and allow for information modelling and extensive data manipulation, attributes especially relevant to medical record applications [10,11,12].…”

“…Furthermore, the issue of validation was deemed especially relevant to medical applications [10,15], as it allows for agreement on a common format for interchanging data among independent sources. To that effect we sought a DTD representation that has been already used successfully in data exchange between heterogeneous databases, but is flexible enough to allow for the inclusion of updates and queries.…”

“…Other types of decision support relevant to anaesthesia include assistance with the calculation of, for example, drug, fluid and ventilation parameters; semi-automated interpretation of investigation results; and perhaps most importantly, integration of reference information with clinical record systems (e.g. drug formularies and clinical guidelines [16]). One current problem with such functionality is that it is almost invariably dependent on the host system.…”
