Value of hypotonic duodenography as an adjunct to pancreatic scanning

Abstract: LondonSUMMARY A technique has been developed which allows the position of the upper gastrointestinal tract, as determined radiographically, to be superimposed on the pancreatic photoscan, performed after an injection of 75Se-selenomethionine. Results of the technique applied to 27 'abnormal' and 23 'normal' subjects are described. The importance of the additional information gained by the combined technique is discussed in terms of normal variation and increased diagnostic yield, and the situations in which it… Show more

“…However, this is not an age-related phenomenon but does stress the importance of correlation of duodenography with isotope scanning as has been previously recommended (McCarthy et al, 1969).…”

“…It is of some interest that calcification is much commoner in the splenic artery and that senile or degenerative aneurysms are also often found in the splenic artery (Kreel, 1972). Other filling defects, such as those due to osteophyte formation, aortic compression, metastases, and Kreel, Agnew, and Bouchier, 1969) and in particular to older age groups. It was thought, however, that there might be a disassociation between the duodenal loop and the head of the pancreas, the loop being displaced downwards more than the pancreas.…”

“…No patient therefore should be subjected to more than an essential minimum number of such tests. Following reports by a number of workers that a normal pancreatic scan argues strongly against the presence of pancreatic disease (Sodee, 1966; Melmed, Agnew, and Bouchier, 1968;McCarthy, Kreel, Agnew, and Bouchier, 1969) scanning is now commonly employed as a screening test. Provision of scanning facilities is restricted to centres where high quality equipment is available and where a large number of patients, from a number of hospitals, can be tested.…”

“…Patients with neoplastic disease are reviewed in the context of a large sample where non-neoplastic pancreatic disease was common. Other aspects of this study have already been published (Melmed, Agnew, and Bouchier, 1968;Agnew, McCarthy, Melmed, and Bouchier, 1969;McCarthy and Brown, 1969;McCarthy, Kreel, Agnew, and Bouchier, 1969;McCarthy, 1970McCarthy, , 1972: in the present paper attention is concentrated on the value of scanning patients with neoplastic disease.…”
