Value of cine MRI for better visualization of the proximal small bowel in normal individuals

Abstract: While enteroclysis seems to be the most efficacious method in achieving bowel distension, enterographic methods have become widespread due to the unpleasantness of enteroclysis and the radiation involved with positioning the catheter. Cine images in MRI can be done without radiation. Our aim is to see if and how cine MR imaging can improve visualization of bowel loops by capturing them while distended. Ten healthy individuals were asked to drink up to 2,000 ml of an oral solution made locally over a 60-min per… Show more

“…Cine-imaging was also performed in a predefined fashion. 23 Acute inflammation was diagnosed in the presence of bowel wall edema on T2WI, hyperperfusion of all bowel wall layers on T1WI. In contrast, sacculations, perienteric fatty proliferation, bowel wall stiffness on dynamic True-FISP, and irregular lymph nodes were considered signs of chronicity.…”

“…In recent years, MRI data acquisitions have been significantly shorter, signal to noise ratio has improved and motion artifact has decreased. Thus, there have been a series of reports about the use of MR imaging in patients with suspected small bowel disease [27][28][29][30][31]. But compared with MDCT, MR imaging still has relatively higher cost, takes longer for data acquisitions and is more susceptible to movement artifacts.…”

“…Though there are still many shortcomings, such as relatively higher cost, longer time required for scanning, more mobile artifacts compared to MSCT scanning, MRI scanning is able to obtain high soft tissue contrast resolution and multi-dimensional imaging. In addition, it is non-invasive and requires no radiation exposure, which is helpful to popularize the MRI examination for small intestines [27][28][29][30][31][32] . New technologies, such as functional cine MR imaging, have been applied to observe dynamic images of the small intestine [31,32] .…”
