Value of ablation therapy in the treatment of lung metastases

Abstract: Tumor metastases are the basic biological characteristics of malignant tumors, and the lungs are the second most prominent metastatic organs in which these develop after the liver. Currently, with the rapid development of ablation technology, ablation therapy as a local treatment is playing an increasingly important role in the treatment of lung metastases. Whether alone or in combination with other treatments, ablation therapy has achieved good therapeutic effects for the treatment of partial lung metastases.… Show more

“…Previous studies investigating treatment outcomes in patients with pulmonary metastases were retrospective reviews of patients treated with a single modality for primary cancers of diverse origins. [19][20][21] Surgery is initially recommended for the local treatment of pulmonary metastases. 14,22 The indications for treatment via metastasectomy have been relatively well studied compared to SBRT, and include good PS, long disease-free survival, and the absence of synchronous metastases.…”

“…RFA of lung metastases offers a minimally invasive, repeatable treatment, with better preservation of lung function treatment when compared to surgical resection [ 8 ]. No studies directly compare RFA with surgery, but published results suggest local control and survival rates similar to surgery [ 8 , 9 ]. Long-term survival data on RFA remain limited when compared to the surgical literature, making it difficult to draw definitive conclusions on the long-term oncological durability of the treatment [ 10 ].…”

“…In addition, lung cancers are heterogeneous with genomic and phenotypic differences not only among different patients but also within the same patient 5 . Therefore, treatments that are independent of driver mutations have broader applications when used as a monotherapy for primary lung cancer or in combination for treatment of metastases to the lung from cancers in other organs 6 , 7 .…”
