Value network and firm performance: the role of knowledge distance and environmental uncertainty

Abstract: Purpose This study aims to empirically examine the relationships among perceived environmental uncertainty (EV), the level of knowledge distance (KD) and the impact of value network on firm performance. Design/methodology/approach The quantitative analysis is based on data from 243 Chinese companies with engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) business in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings The two dimensions of value network [network centrality (NC) and network openness (NO)] have a dif… Show more

“…Capaldo et al (2017) studied the relationship between technological distance and knowledge maturity, arguing that technological distance reduces the benefits of knowledge maturity because limited familiarity undermines the reliable use of mature knowledge while making it more difficult to retrieve and apply. Lissillour et al (2023) stressed that smaller knowledge distances enable smoother communication between organizations and knowledge sources, thus reducing costs while promoting business performance. In the research on innovation, a few studies emphasized that knowledge distance may lead to coordination conflicts between existing innovation tasks and weaken innovation efficiency (Nooteboom et al, 2007;Gilsing et al, 2008;Ho and Wang, 2015).…”

“…This study examines two fundamental leading attributes in the context of the emerging agricultural cooperatives in the central Free State. Lissillour et al (2023), Porter (1980), and Uzzi (1997) associated the configuration of firms' value networks with competition intensity concerning factors and variables that threaten a firm's disposition to competitiveness. Competition intensity refers to the degree of rivalry among firms within an industry that influences each other's profit potential (Assala, Bylykbashi, and Roehrich, 2021).…”

“…Whether adopting an exploratory innovation model or utilization of an innovation model, innovation is an important value-creating activity for enterprises. Thus, the acquisition of the core competitiveness of enterprises will also shift from occupying traditional resources to possessing knowledge resources and continuous learning and innovation abilities [60]. In addition, enterprises need dynamic and persistent learning and innovation and to adjust innovation models and methods according to changes in the external environment.…”
