This study constructs comprehensive panel data based on the China City Statistical Yearbook and environmental indicators disclosed by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment from 2013 to 2017, using a difference-in-difference (DID) model to empirically validate the effects of the ecological environmental damage compensation system on urban air quality, followed by a further analysis of the system’s effect mechanism, namely, how the system has generated effects on reducing environmental pollution. This study finds that: (1) the ecological environmental damage compensation system can significantly improve urban air quality, and small cities are more sensitive to the pilot policy; and (2) the main impact is that the pilot policy mechanism improved the urban pollutant treatment capacity and reduced the proportion of the secondary industry. After multiple robustness tests, this conclusion still holds. This study provides empirical evidence for fully implementing an ecological environmental damage compensation system.

The quality of air is closely linked with the life quality of humans, plantations, and wildlife. It needs to be monitored and preserved continuously. Transportations, industries, construction sites, generators, fireworks, and waste burning have a major percentage in degrading the air quality. These sources are required to be used in a safe and controlled manner. Using traditional laboratory analysis or installing bulk and expensive models every few miles is no longer efficient. Smart devices are needed for collecting and analyzing air data. The quality of air depends on various factors, including location, traffic, and time. Recent researches are using machine learning algorithms, big data technologies, and the Internet of Things to propose a stable and efficient model for the stated purpose. This review paper focuses on studying and compiling recent research in this field and emphasizes the Data sources, Monitoring, and Forecasting models. The main objective of this paper is to provide the astuteness of the researches happening to improve the various aspects of air polluting models. Further, it casts light on the various research issues and challenges also.

Based on the intergenerational externalities views, this paper builds the link between ecological damage claim policy and firms' green innovation. Making polluters bear intergenerational responsibility is considered to be a key move to break intergenerational externalities and effectively address the problem of multiple environmental failures. The ecological damage claim policy makes the environmental rights of future generations being remedied through judicial procedures, and can clarify pollution responsibility to push firms to choose long-term environmental solutions for achieving intergenerational sustainability and maintaining intergenerational justice. Using longitudinal data (2012-2017) covering 4992 Chinese firm-year observations in high-pollution industries, we find that ecological damage claim policy promotes firms' green innovation. This positive effect is stronger when the firm is located in a region with stronger environmental enforcement and more environmental organizations.
