The work presented in this thesis concerns the development of a value driven engineering design assessment framework and its application to the conceptual design of an Unmanned Air System (UAS) to be utilised in a defence application. This research demonstrates the implementation of the value driven design philosophy in this framework, identifying value enhancing designs, with value not converted to monetary worth and as perceived by all stakeholders involved. A multi-criteria and multi-stakeholder decision making analysis is adopted to address their preferences as well as to study their interacting strategic choices. The ultimate objective of this framework is to convert engineering design to a decision making analysis with multiple conflicting objectives of multiple stakeholders considered.This framework is capable of providing a product definition and estimation of all performance and cost related attributes for the conceptual phase. However, instead of pertaining to a single aircraft concept, a broad range of combinations of UAS configurations and geometries is generated by systematically searching alternative concepts and design configurations through a novel parameterization of the aircraft geometric topologies.Value, related to the designed system's capabilities or performance and lifecycle cost, is used to compare different alternatives in the decision making of engineering design through the appropriate value model. Following a valuefocused approach, a novel multi-attribute value model is introduced for objectively capturing the stakeholder's preferences and expectations. Furthermore, a more sophisticated multi-attribute utility model, based on standard Multi-attribute Utility Theory, is employed in the evaluation.Game Theory as an optimization tool is used to develop a novel hybrid cooperative/non-cooperative non-zero sum, complete information game among all involved stakeholders as players. This game successfully addresses the stakeholders' preferences in a functional outcome-focused way, resolving the high indeterminacy of the alternative designs through a cooperative game. At the same time, their strategic interactions are captured in a process-focused non-cooperative game. Hence, the optimal design is identified through the simultaneous employment of the Nash bargaining solution and the Nash equilibrium.i

The paper aims at discussing the design choices of a flexible E-maintenance platform. The platform is built based on the combined use of web services and statistical analysis, in order to obtain a tool-box featuring high usability for an agile integration of maintenance activities within the production process. The flexibility is demonstrated through the implementation of Condition Based Maintenance in a manufacturing case study. This provides a proof of the potential improvement that can be achieved for the integration of maintenance management within production management, leveraging on a strategy of condition based operations of the shop floor.

Abstract:Man's level of dependence on equipment is increasing. This degree of dependence requires high levels of availability, which has been changing the impact that disruption of these systems causes. For many systems, an interruption has consequences that go beyond the dimension of financial loss, thus justifying a multidimensional consequence approach by using multicriteria (MCDM/A) models. Thus, understanding the relationships between and among risk, reliability and maintenance (RRM) is essential in order to offer more comprehensive solutions to the various problems often treated in isolation from each other, and which are the most important problems of the competitive market. This chapter discusses fundamental topics about RRM, including tools for risk analysis and hazard identification, concepts of reliability, maintenance techniques such as RCM and TPM and eliciting expert's knowledge. These topics are presented in order to provide a basis for structuring different MCDM/A problems that are addressed in several chapters. Some fundamental aspects could be used as input to decision models in different forms such as attributes, objectives, criteria, and problem context. Basic Concepts on Risk AnalysisThere are many concepts on risk found in the literature and also different perceptions to it. However, if a decision is being made and risk is involved, then, the risk concept should combine consequences and probabilities, incorporating the DM's preferences over that, as seen in Chap. 2.Actually, a 'decision process' with no DM's preference has no decision being made, as discussed at the end of Chap. 1. Instead of that, that process either: a) has some preference structure incorporated within the model, at random; b) is just arbitrary following a previous decision of someone else.Even so, in most of real cases, the consequences are multidimensional, and therefore, require an MCDM/A approach for building a decision model. The following topics are mainly based on the basic RRM literature and do not incorporate the idea of decision support, as given in Chap. 2. That is, DM's preferences are not necessarily considered in the model.
