Value CMR: Towards a Comprehensive, Rapid, Cost-Effective Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract: Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is considered the gold standard for measuring cardiac function. Further, in a single CMR exam, information about cardiac structure, tissue composition, and blood flow could be obtained. Nevertheless, CMR is underutilized due to long scanning times, the need for multiple breath-holds, use of a contrast agent, and relatively high cost. In this work, we propose a rapid, comprehensive, contrast-free CMR exam that does not require repeated breath-holds, based on recent devel… Show more

“…CMR diagnosis also helps with the appropriate management of a patient to optimize the timing of treatment to prevent further complications. Accurate and rapid CMR scans in cancer patients and survivors who have received cancer therapeutics could be beneficial as cancer therapies could lead to cardiomyopathies, myocarditis, or other cardiotoxic effects and heart failure [ 15 ]. A rapid CMR scan could lead to early detection of toxicity and prevention of these treatment complications [ 15 ].…”

Similarly, CMR has become an invaluable tool for the early detection of transplant rejection among patients with cardiac transplants [ 39 ].…”

“…Cinematic (CINE) CMR is used to assess the condition and function of the heart in patients with various cardiac diseases and is included by default in virtually any CMR imaging examination [39], [81]. The CINE technique is unique in that it allows clinicians to assess the functionality of the heart by acquiring "movies" demonstrating the heart's motion.…”
