“…In this vein, Gen Zers differ from other generations in the degree to which they lean on their moral reasoning when making consumption choices (Atanasova and Eckhardt 2021; Strenze 2021). This distance from the materialism of older generations deserves a cultural explanation that can transcend the common approach of Hofstede (2011), given that the two indicators of Collectivism and Masculinity did not add much information to our models.…”

“…In fact, postmaterialism is connected to a greater demand for values satisfaction, quality of life, and self-expression, in opposition to the narrow focus of materialism on achieving satisfaction and status through the consumption and possession of goods (e.g., Atanasova and Eckhardt 2021; Inglehart 2008; Kasser et al 2004). Fittingly, postmaterialism is prevailing in young generations (Delistavrou, Krystallis, and Tilikidou 2020; Islam et al 2018; Strenze 2021), who are more likely to enact their individual values in the form “of informal, individualized and everyday activities” (Harris, Wyn, and Younes 2010, p. 10). Dittmar et al (2014; see also Watson 2021) found a robust negative relationship between materialism and well-being, suggesting a poor satisfaction of psychological needs at the top of the Maslow hierarchy.…”

“…The majority of the current generation of retirement migrants came of age in the 60s and 70s of the 20th century, a period characterised by increased prosperity and consumerism. Part of this generation of baby boomers is thought to have undergone changes in value systems, with greater emphasis on choice, autonomy and self‐expression (Gilleard & Higgs, 2007) and a greater focus on nonmaterial goals, such as self‐development, equality and freedom (Inglehart, 1971; Strenze, 2021). There is evidence that some retirement migrants are driven by postmaterialist values.…”

“…Political scientists have made a distinction between private values and political values of citizens (Zhai, 2021). Strenze (2021), for example, argued that while political values have become more postmaterialistic in the Unites States and Western Europe since 1970s, values related to work have become more materialistic. At the outset, values such as authoritarianism, emancipation, and democracy shape domestic politics and, thereby, the development of this stream.…”
