Abstract:Patients presenting with hyperammonemic encephalopathy are likely to have hepatic encephalopathy. However, valproate (an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer) can also cause hyperammonemic encephalopathy and belongs on the differential for patients taking it, especially if there are recent contributory medication changes.
