Valorizing Constituents of Cashew Nut Shell Liquid toward the Sustainable Development of New Drugs against Chagas Disease

Abstract: Six new ether phospholipid analogues encompassing constituents from cashew nut shell liquid as the lipid portion were synthesized in an effort to valorize byproducts of the cashew industry toward the generation of potent compounds against Chagas disease. Anacardic acids, cardanols, and cardols were used as the lipid portions and choline as the polar headgroup. The compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antiparasitic activity against different developmental stages of Trypanosoma cruzi. Compounds 16 and 17… Show more

“…In turn, the latter ones were coupled with the choline headgroup in the presence of 1-(mesitylenesulfonyl)-3-nitro-1,2,4-triazolide (MSNT) as the condensing agent. The obtained derivatives were active on the epimastigote, trypomastigote, and amastigote life stages of T. cruzi , with 36 exhibiting a remarkable submicromolar activity ( 36 , IC 50 = 0.17 μM) against the clinically relevant, intracellular amastigote form of T. cruzi …”

“…Cashew tree (Anacardium occidentale L.) is a tropical crop (native from Brazil) with multiple uses which can contribute to several food and industry sectors (Nyirenda et al 2021;Chen et al 2023;Nunes Lemes et al 2023). With around 1,095,000 tons of nuts produced in 2022 (www.fao.org/faostat/fr/#data/), cashew tree ranks third among the nut crops after almond (1,477,000 tons) and walnut (1,1556 tons).…”
