Validity/Reliability of PHQ-9 and PHQ-2 Depression Scales Among Adults Living with HIV/AIDS in Western Kenya

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Depression greatly burdens subSaharan Africa, especially populations living with HIV/ AIDS, for whom few validated depression scales exist. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), a brief dualpurpose instrument yielding DSM-IV diagnoses and severity, and PHQ-2, an ultra-brief screening tool, offer advantages in resource-constrained settings. OBJECTIVE:To assess the validity/reliability of PHQ-9 and PHQ-2. DESIGN: Observational, two occasions 7 days apart.PARTICIPANTS: A total of 347 patients attend… Show more

“…25,26 It has also been successfully used in diverse populations, specifically those with HIV. 26,27 Rather than using the differences in diagnoses of ODD and MDD, we dichotomized the depressive disorder diagnoses (depressive disorder versus minimal or no depressive symptoms), since the nine items from the instrument provide a method to calculate a count of symptoms and severity to identify these disorders.…”

“…PHQ-9 has proven reliable and valid for diagnosing depression and measuring its severity; its reliability and validity have also been shown among SSA populations [10,12]. Subjects scored each of the nine diagnostic symptoms of DSM-IV depression on a scale from 0 (not present at all) to 3 (present nearly every day); total score ranges from 0 to 27.…”

“…The PHQ-9 is reliable and valid for both making a criterion-based diagnosis and measuring the severity of depression [22]. The instrument asks the subject to score each of the nine DSM-IV depressive symptoms from 0 (not present at all) to 3 (present nearly every day); thus, the score ranges between 0 and the PHQ-9 has been used in sub-Saharan populations and has been shown to be reliable and valid [1,33]. Cronbach's Alpha score for this sample was 0.867 6.…”
