Validity, reliability and responsiveness to change of the Italian palliative care outcome scale: a multicenter study of advanced cancer patients

Abstract: BackgroundThere is an increasing requirement to assess outcomes, but few measures have been tested for advanced medical illness. We aimed to test the validity, reliability and responsiveness of the Palliative care Outcome Scale (POS), and to analyse predictors of change after the transition to palliative care.MethodsPhase 1: multicentre, mixed method study comprising cognitive and qualitative interviews with patients and staff, cultural refinement and adaption. “…It is vital also to assess the capacity to meet preferences in that setting, including the quality of care, wherever care is offered even when measurement is challenging [ 48 ]. The quality of care can include controlling pain and symptoms and addressing concerns, information and practical and financial issues, such as measured in the Palliative care Outcome Scale [ 49 , 50 ]. It may also include financial hardship, such as out of pocket expenses [ 51 ].…”

“…This study is a secondary analysis of the Palliative Care Outcome Scale (POS) Italian validation study [30]. We also conducted a literature review to examine and interpret the clinical meaning of FACIT-Sp scores and to define reference intervals for FACIT-Sp scores for newly diagnosed cancer patients, cancer survivors, and terminal cancer patients.…”

“…This study is limited by its cross‐sectional design. Validity and reliability, including longitudinal and inter‐rater reliability have been established for the generic Palliative Care Outcome Scale from which the MyPOS is derived, and work is currently underway to evaluate the test‐retest reliability and responsiveness of MyPOS in detecting clinically important differences in myeloma patients over time . This longitudinal analysis will strengthen our understanding of how to most effectively use MyPOS to improve patient care.…”
