Validity, Reliability, and Responsiveness of the Dutch Version of the London Chest Activity of Daily Living Scale in Patients With Severe COPD

Abstract: This study assesses the validity, reliability, and responsiveness of the Dutch version of the London Chest Activity of Daily Living scale (LCADL).The English LCADL version was translated into Dutch and then back-translated to English to check if the translation was conceptually equivalent to the original LCADL.Measurement properties were evaluated in191 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (70 males; age 62 ± 9 years; FEV1 33 ± 10% pred). Construct validity was assessed using disease-spec… Show more

“…15 The London Chest Activity of Daily Living scale is a commonly used measure, with many language validation studies. 12,[22][23][24][25] It has 15 items related to 4 domains, including self-care, domestic, physical, and leisure. Each item score ranges from 0 to 5 (the total score ranges from 0 to 75), and higher scores show increased limitation during ADL.…”

“…10,11 Knowing the possible factors that influence the performance of ADL will assist with targeting appropriate rehabilitation programs to increase independence levels and/or prevent further declines in patients with COPD. A number of studies have sought to determine the correlation of variables that may influence the performance of ADL in subjects with COPD, 7,12,13 yet, which variables have the greatest influence on ADL is still unclear. Questionnaires and scales are the most commonly used methods for evaluating ADL limitations.…”

“…Shortness of breath, the most common symptom of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), severely affects patient's quality of life, and when coupled with fatigue, impairs various functions in activities of daily living (ADL) [ 1 ]. Objective measurement of function in ADL is clinically important for understanding the health status of patients.…”

“…The LCADL is a highly valid and reliable method for assessing shortness of breath severity during ADL in patients with COPD [ 10 ]. The questionnaire has been translated into many languages, and the validity and reliability of these translated versions have also been verified [ 1 11 12 13 ]. Clinical tools to evaluate the quality of life of Korean patients with COPD have been developed and are being used in clinical and experimental circumstances after validation study [ 14 15 ].…”
