Validity of wax and acrylic as soft-tissue simulation materials used inin vitroradiographic studies

Abstract: The soft tissues of the average human cheek can be simulated with 13-17 mm wax or 14.5 mm acrylic in in vitro radiographic studies.

“…To simulate soft tissues, we used five types of materials in three diverse thicknesses. Both material type and thickness have been widely used 2,5,6,9,10,15,16 with aims to simulate the real anatomical structures. 27,28 In this study, we showed that both the material type and the thickness tested influenced the gain of density in bone tissue as demonstrated by DSR.…”

“…1 In those studies, soft-tissue simulators are often used to simulate what is present in vivo. 2 In a clinical situation, when an X-ray beam interacts with soft tissues and reaches the object, its intensity is attenuated, resulting in low-energy photons producing low-density areas in the image. 3 The use of soft-tissue simulation materials having densities similar to the tissues found in patients in a real environment helps avoid exposure of patients to excessive radiation during in vivo studies.…”

“…Simulation of soft tissue attenuation characteristic was achieved by applying 20 layers of pink modeling wax (Cavex, Holand BV modeling wax) to reach 14 mm thickness on the outer surface of the skull while the mandible and maxilla were fixed in centric position (7) .…”
