Validity of the Severity of Dependence Scale (SDS) Construct Applying the Item Response Theory to a Non-Clinical Sample of Heroin Users

Abstract: The results show unidimensional structure of the SDS scale. Item calibration shows they are distributed along the continuum, which must be taken into account when calculating total scores. The study's limitations are noted.

“…The SDS is a short, easily administered instrument for measuring psychological components of dependence and is recognised as a robust screening tool across a variety of substances in diverse populations (Gossop et al, ; Gossop, Best, et al, ). In keeping with studies of similar substances (Ferri, 2000; Gonzalez‐Saiz et al, ; Gossop et al, ; Kaye & Darke, ; Lawrinson et al, ), this study clearly supports the use of the SDS to screen for problems related to khat use.…”

“…Even though the SDS does not entirely cover the construct of substance dependence [11] , evidence on the usefulness of this scale as an instrument for substance dependence screening according to DSM diagnostic criteria (criteria validity) has been provided [12][13][14][15] . These studies have established the cut-off scores that discriminate best between the presence or absence of dependence on amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine and cannabis.…”

“…Moreover, it is senseless to refer to test reliability where IRT is concerned, as measurement accuracy is estimated specifically (standard error of measurement) for each ability level in the variable. Other advantages over CTT include the additivity of items, and interval level measurement [20][21][22][23][24][25] .…”
