Validity of the International HIV Dementia Scale in Brazil

Abstract: The International HIV Dementia Scale (IHDS) is a crosscultural screening test to detect HIV dementia. It is quick and does not require a neurologist to administer it. It was initially tested on HIV patients from the USA and Uganda, with reported sensitivity and specificity of 80 and 55%, respectively 1 . Subsequently, it was translated into different languages and validated in distinct settings 2,3 . We aimed to validate the IHDS in a Brazilian cohort of HIV patients and determine if non-clinician health profe… Show more

“…When we used the strategy described by Rodrigues et al (9) of shifting the cutoff point of the IHDS to ≤11 to increase the sensitivity up to 75.7% for the detection of less severe neurocognitive impairment, we identifi ed a prevalence of 71.2% (n=79) in our patients; these fi ndings are more consistent with the previously reported literature (11) (30) .…”

“…The specificity and sensitivity of the IHDS for the detection of dementia with a score less than or equal to 10 are 55% and 80% respectively in the Ugandan cohort [22] [23] and 57% and 80% in the cohort US [22]. In Brazil [24], the specificity is 55% and specificity of 80%; in South Africa 45% and 79% [25]. These data have confirmed our IHDS to use as a screening tool.…”
