Validity of the French form of the somatosensory amplification scale in a non-clinical sample

Abstract: The SomatoSensory Amplification Scale (SSAS) is a 10-item self-report instrument designed to assess the tendency to detect somatic and visceral sensations and experience them as unusually intense, toxic and alarming. This study examines the psychometric properties of a French version of the SSAS in a nonclinical population and, more specifically, explores its construct, convergent and discriminant validities. The SSAS was completed by 375 university students, together with measures of somatization propensity (… Show more

“…The Bodily Distress Syndrome (BDS) Checklist [ 17 ] is another tool comprising 30 items that can be self-administered to screen for somatic symptoms. Other tools that assess the somatic symptoms or can be used as a screening tool for somatization are the Self-reported Somatic Symptom Scale-China (SSS-CN) [ 6 ], the Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire (4-DSQ) [ 20 ], the Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI) [ 7 ], Screening for Somatoform Disorders-7 (SOMS-7 T) [ 10 ], the ICD-10 Symptom List [ 11 ], and the Somatosensory Amplification Scale (SSAS) [ 18 ].…”

“…The instrument helps in assessing bodily sensations. The three components gauged using this tool are body hypervigilance, rare and weak body sensations, and emotional reaction to the sensations [ 18 ]. The tool is easy to self-administer and has extremely well-established validity and reliability.…”

“…The original SSAS has been translated into multiple languages and has shown good internal consistency and test-retest repeatability. 26,33,34 The sum of the 7-items had a total possible score ranging from 7 to 35, where higher scores indicate higher non-noxious somatosensory amplification. Scores were categorized into sex-specific quartiles, as women typically report higher multisensory sensitivity than men, 11,24 enabling high vs low somatosensory amplification comparisons while adjusting for sex differences.…”
