Validity of the Acti4 software using ActiGraph GT3X+accelerometer for recording of arm and upper body inclination in simulated work tasks

Abstract: Being inexpensive, small, water-resistant and without wires, ActiGraph GT3X+ seems to be a valid mean for direct long-term field measurements of arm and trunk inclinations when analysed by the Acti4 customised software.

“…The Acti4 software has been validated in a number of studies of movement of the arm and upper body, and step count and frequency in walking and running in semi-standardized settings. All studies were evaluated with high sensitivity of ≥95% and specificity ≥93% for detecting physical activity types and body postures (25)(26)(27). Furthermore, a number of studies (28) have validated the software for various activity types, eg, sitting, standing and walking, in free-living conditions.…”

“…In addition to the pre-specified FBW with daily duration of trunk inclination >60°, we considered FBW >30° and FBW >90°. Acti4 has proven valid in detecting inclination of the trunk of >30°, >60° and >90° with the accelerometer placed on the upper back (26).…”

“…Using the individual reference measurements obtained at the beginning of the recordings, the duration (minutes/day) of forward bending in the frontal and sagittal planes was computed with a cut-point of ≥30° from the individual reference point (23,32). This cut-point was protocol-based on a previous study where different cutpoints on the association between forward bending and LBPi were tested (23).…”

“…IMU including tri-axial accelerometer and gyroscopes (ActiGraph GT9X Link, ActiGraph, Pensacola, USA) were positioned on the upper back at T1-T2 level [29] and the thigh. The latter was used for obtaining the number of steps per day [30].…”
