Validity of self‐reported measures for periodontitis surveillance in a rural sample

Abstract: Background:To evaluate the predictive performance of self-reported questions for periodontitis screening in a representative sample of a rural population. Methods:Nine questions were compared with gold standard clinical examinations (probing six sites/tooth, full-mouth). Case definition for severe periodontitis was defined according to World Workshop (2017-WW) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/American Academy of Periodontology (CDC/AAP). Diagnostic tests such as sensitivity (SN), specificity (SP)… Show more

“…The screening accuracy of the CDC/AAP questionnaire for periodontitis and severe periodontitis was similar or slightly better in the current study compared to previous ones in terms of AUROC, sensitivity and specificity (Carra et al, 2018; Eke & Dye, 2009; Eke et al, 2013; Montero et al, 2020; Reiniger et al, 2020; Slade, 2007; Verhulst et al, 2019). However, it might be inappropriate to compare the present results with other studies due to the differences in population characteristics, sample size, case definitions and periodontal examination protocols.…”

“…The oral behaviour-related question about the use of floss was closely linked to periodontal health. The performance of the use of dental floss for periodontitis or severe periodontitis varied in previous studies (Carra et al, 2018;Eke et al, 2013;Montero et al, 2020;Reiniger et al, 2020;Verhulst et al, 2019). It may be due to the heterogeneity of different studies in terms of the characteristics of the study population, especially for dental care habits.…”

“…Area‐level socioeconomic disadvantages, inadequate monitoring of alcohol distribution, and regulations are determinants of greater exposure to alcohol 13 . Moreover, geographic remoteness (residing in rural areas) and socioeconomic deprivation can also contribute to a poorer periodontal status 14,15 . Considering the peculiarities of urban and rural populations, it seems that both alcohol use and alcohol‐related harm are higher in rural areas compared with metropolitan regions 16 .…”
