Abstract: To assess the applicability of Pont's index for arch width prediction among the Bangladeshi population. Materials and Methods: Models of 37 male and 63 female subjects ranging in age between 16 to 25 years were randomly selected out of all patients attending the Orthodontic clinic of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). ObjectivesTo inspect the human adult odontometrics by the assistance of 3D cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) imaging in Saudi, Jordan and Egypt population.Materials and MethodsData of this cross sectional study from 252 subject were analysed by 3D CBCT volumetric data in college of dentistry, Aljouf University, from December 2016 to May 2017. All measurements were done by 3D on demand software. The tooth size from 2nd molar to 2nd molar of maxillary and mandibular arch was measured. Independent t test and ANOVA were used to examine the differences between gender and among Arabic population (Saudi, Jordan and Egypt) on the all tooth size.ResultsComparison between the right and left side odontometrics were significantly dissimilar in 9 out of 14 pairs (p < 0.05). The odontometrics of the 2nd molar to 2nd molar tooth of maxillary and mandibular arch between gender and among Saudi, Jordan and Egypt population were insignificant (p > 0.05).Conclusion3D CBCT imaging permits us to measure the tooth size effectively and accurately. Based on results, significant asymmetry was revealed in 9 out of 14 pairs in relation to side disparities. No significant differences in tooth size between gender and among races were found. CBCT can elevate the record keeping problem, human adult odontometrics for the analysis can be obtained directly from the digital image.

Background Many indices have been suggested to help orthodontists in predicting the ideal dental arch width. One of these was Pont’s index which was established by Pont. He suggested equations to predict the ideal maxillary dental arch width (interpremolar and intermolar) from the combined mesiodistal width of the maxillary incisors. This study aimed to test the applicability of Pont’s index as an orthodontic diagnostic tool in Egyptian population and to compare the results with those obtained from studies of different ethnic subjects. Methods This study was performed using dental casts of 184 Egyptian individuals (82 males and 102 females; age range, 19–24 years). The casts were divided into 46 casts with normal occlusion, 46 casts with class I, 46 casts with class II and 46 casts with class III malocclusion, according to Angle’s classification. Alginate impressions were taken for all patients and poured immediately using dental plaster. The real models were transformed into digital models using three-dimensional laser scanner to allow digital model analysis. Predicted arch widths were calculated using Pont’s equations. The predicted values were compared to the measured values. Results Intra class correlation coefficient (ICC) (absolute agreement) between measured and predicted arch widths was determined. Poor absolute agreement was found between measured arch width values and the corresponding values calculated according to Pont’s index. Conclusion According to the results of this study, Pont’s index is not a reliable method for predicting the ideal dental arch widths in Egyptian populations.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of malocclusion is increasing annually, this is accompanied by an increase in the number of visits to orthodontists for orthodontic treatment. Qualitative diagnostics is the key to successful treatment and an important stage in the prevention of complications (recessions, root resorption, ankylosis, etc.). AIMS: A comparative analysis was made of the values of the indices for assessing the transversal parameters of the dentition for residents of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region MATERIALS AND METHODS: The width of the combined incisor and the width in premolars and molars were measured according to the method proposed by A. Pon. Next, a comparison of the parameters that were obtained by measuring in the framework of the study and calculated using the index is made. All data were statistically processed. RESULTS: The work was carried out using diagnostic models of 200 patients who fit the criteria for inclusion in the study. The results obtained allow us to conclude that the index values of the width for patients in our region do not match. Thus, the interpremolar distance was on average 1.5 mm less than calculated by the index, and the molar distance was 1.25 mm. CONCLUSIONS: Further research is needed to find new guidelines to increase the reliability of diagnostic measures
