Validity of fine needle aspiration cytology in diagnosing thyroid gland neoplasms

Abstract: Objectives: To determine the validity of Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in diagnosing thyroid neoplasms and to identify the causes of false positive and negative results. Method:Thyroid FNACs of 100 patients with subsequent histology were analysed. The diagnostic categories used included Thy 1 to Thy 5. Thy 3 was subdivided into Thy 3a and Thy 3b depending on the presence or absence of features suggestive of a follicular neoplasm. Histology results were categorized as neoplastic or non neoplastic. “…Therefore our findings (31-40 years age group) are within the findings of the international studies (Table 4). There is a wide variation in the global statistics relating to validity of FNAC as a tool for diagnosing thyroid pathology and the Royal College of pathologists (RCPAAustralasia) has allowed a wide range for sensitivity, specificity of FNAC with regard to thyroid neoplasms [13,14]. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for diagnosis of neoplasm by FNAC in our study are acceptable.…”

“…T-FNAC, in addition to having a high negative predictive value is documented to have a sensitivity and specificity ranging from 77.7%-93% and 67%-100% respectively (4)(5)(6)(7)(8).…”

“…It is important to differentiate neoplastic from non neoplastic thyroid enlargement, to provide optimum healthcare to affected patients. Thyroid fine needle aspiration cytology (T-FNAC) is a widely accepted diagnostic tool for preoperative assessment of solitary thyroid nodules, diffuse and multi-nodular goiters with specificity ranging between 67%-100% and sensitivity ranging between 77.7%-93% (4)(5)(6)(7)(8). T-FNAC diagnostic value is enhanced when combined with radiological investigations and thyroid function assays (6).…”
