Validity of DISHES 98, a computerised dietary history interview: energy and macronutrient intake

Abstract: Objective: To estimate the relative validity of a computerised dietary history instrument (DISHES 98). Settings: Munich and Berlin. Subjects: A total of 148 persons aged 19 ± 59 y recruited from two research centres. Design: A relative validation study. Energy and macronutrient intakes obtained with DISHES 98 were compared to those assessed with 3-day weighed dietary records and with a 24 h dietary recall. Results: Intakes of energy, total, saturated and monounsaturated fat, polysaccharides and alcohol were si… Show more

“…As underweight persons may be prone to vitamin D deficiency due to inadequate food consumption, we examined the association between serum 25OHD levels and the ratio of EI to REE (EI/REE) (Wortsman et al, 2000) as measure of adequate food consumption. It is often observed that EI/REE correlates strongly with BMI (Mensink et al, 2001). Low-energy reporting as determined by a low ratio of EI/REE is positively associated with BMI.…”

“…Trained nutritionists interviewed the participants about their dietary habits in the past 4 weeks before the examination, using the computerized modified dietary history instrument DISHES 98 (Dietary Interview Software for Health Examination Studies) with documented validity (Mensink et al, 2001). Special tableware and drawings of food portions helped to facilitate the estimations of portion sizes.…”

“…The chosen setting of two times 4 days of recording caused an overlap of Wednesdays and Saturdays. It is known that food consumption differs between weekdays and weekends [12,15,16]. Internal analyses showed that intakes of energy and carbohydrates on Saturdays were significantly higher than the intakes on weekdays (data not shown).…”

“…If answer categories of the questionnaire covered a range of values, the midpoint of the range of frequency or amount was used. A subsample of 4030 participants were also interviewed about their alcohol consumption using the computerised dietary history program, called DISHES (Dietary Interview Software for Health Examination Studies) with documented validity (Mensink et al, 2001).…”

“…In this way, more realistic consumption levels are obtained than without the differentiation of beverage type (Feunekes et al, 1999). In a subsample of 4030 participants, the alcohol consumption reported in from the food frequency questionnaire was compared with that of a dietary history (DISHES 98), DISHES has been previously validated against 3-day weighted dietary records and a 24 h dietary recall (Mensink et al, 2001). Pearson's correlation coefficients for alcohol consumption between the food frequency questionnaire and the dietary history were 0.74 (Po0.0001) for women and 0.70 (Po0.0001) for men.…”
