Validity and Reproducibility of a Self-administered Food Frequency Questionnaire in the JPHC Study Cohort II: Study Design, Participant Profile and Results in Comparison with Cohort I

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the validity and reproducibility of a self-administered food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to estimate nutrient and food intake in the subjects of the Japan Public Health Center-based prospective Study on Cancer and Cardiovascular Diseases (JPHC Study Cohort II). The FFQ was originally developed to estimate intake in the JPHC Study Cohort I. A total of 392 subjects were recruited from the entire cohort participants in the 6 areas of Cohort II on a voluntary basis. Th… Show more

“…The performance of both the DHQ and BDHQ in the present study was thus comparable with these other extensive (23,24) and short dietary questionnaires (17,25,26) . To our knowledge, the present study is the first validation study to compare food group intakes obtained from long and short versions of the same questionnaire.…”

“…Our reproducibility figures were 10% on average higher than those with smaller minimum-maximum ranges, which may be partly due to the fact that the number of subjects in this survey was greater than those in the recent literature. [11][12][13] In conclusion, we previously observed fairly high relative validity values for consumption of foods and nutrients estimated with our short FFQ versus those assessed with 3-day weighed diet records. 14 Moderate validity was attained for intake of fatty acids measured with our FFQ against plasma concentration.…”

“…Spearman rank correlation coefficients between the FFQs and DRs were 0.44 (107 women) in Cohort I 43 and 0.40 (178 women) in Cohort II for the baseline survey, 41 and 0.51 (113 women) in Cohort I 44 and 0.48 (176 women) in Cohort II 45 for the 5-year follow-up survey.…”
