Validity and reliability of the MD Anderson dysphagia inventory in English and Chinese in head and neck cancer patients

Abstract: Aims: Patient-reported outcome measures are important in assessing the impact of dysphagia on quality of life. Our aim was to adapt and examine the cultural validity and reliability of a swallowing-related quality of life measure, the MD Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI), in English and Chinese, with head and neck cancer patients. “…CSE was conducted per the profession's peak national organization guidelines (Speech Pathology Australia) 15 . Outcomes of fluid/diet trials were scored with the Functional Oral Intake Scale 16 (FOIS): a 7‐point scale validated for stroke but commonly used in research reporting head and neck cancer 17–19 . FOIS defines dysphagia severity based on fluid/diet modification and dependence on enteral feeding (FOIS = 1, nil by mouth [NBM]; FOIS = 7, total oral diet).…”

“…15 Outcomes of fluid/diet trials were scored with the Functional Oral Intake Scale 16 (FOIS): a 7-point scale validated for stroke but commonly used in research reporting head and neck cancer. [17][18][19] FOIS defines dysphagia severity based on fluid/diet modification and dependence on enteral feeding (FOIS = 1, nil by mouth [NBM]; FOIS = 7, total oral diet). For this study, FOIS data were recategorized into 4 severity categories: normal (FOIS = 7), total oral diet; mild (FOIS = 6), total oral diet, specific limitations; moderate (FOIS = 5), total oral diet, special preparation/compensations; and severe (FOIS 4), total oral diet, single consistency/tube dependent 6 some oral intake.…”
