Validity and Reliability of the Japanese Version of the Self Esteem Inventory.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the Self Esteem Inventory (SEI) for use in Japan. Internal consistency and split-half for the scales' reliability, criterion-related validity and construct validity were tested on 244 primary school children. At the same time, the subjects responded to the Father, Mother and Child Relationship Inventory (FMCI) and the General Anxiety Test (GAT) questionnaires. Cronbach's α coefficient for each of the above three scales… Show more

“…The test-retest reliability coefficients of the SEI have been reported to be 0.88 [25,26], 0.80 and 0.82 [27], and 0.76 to 0.85 [28]. The Cronbach alpha coefficient for the instrument's internal consistency has been reported as 0.84, and the split-half reliability as 0.80 [29].…”

“…Reported Cronbach coefficient αs for test–retest reliability were .72 and .85; α coefficient for parallel form reliability with Piers Self-Concept Scale was .86 (Chiu, 1985). Tahara, Okita, Tsurusaki, Inokuchi, and Higashi (1997) reported the Cronbach’s α coefficient to be .84 and the spilt-half reliability as .80.…”
