Validity and Reliability of the Newly Developed Malay-Language Health Belief of Bloating (HB-Bloat) Scale

Abstract: Abdominal bloating (AB), a common complaint that affects quality of life and disturbs psychological well-being, is largely a behavioral-driven disorder. We aimed to develop and validate a new health belief of bloating (HB-Bloat) scale in the Malay language. The initial item pool was developed based on the theory of planned behavior, empirical literatures, expert review and in-depth interviews. Using the population with bloating (diagnosed based on the Rome IV criteria and pictogram), exploratory and confirmato… Show more

“…The interview records were analyzed using grounded theory and then developed as six categories, as shown in Table 1. Then, the developed 22 questions, including 20 closed questions and two open questions based on the aforementioned six categories, were selected using three methods for item selection (to eliminate indiscriminative items, to quantify the correlation between the score of each item and the total score to eliminate indiscriminative and low correlation coefficient items, and to further identify the principle component factor structure present in a set of variables by utilizing EFA with varimax rotation and CFA) [18][19][20]. An additional three questions were added due to the suggestions of five experts in different fields, including: (1) "You have found time to exercise to increase your physical fitness"; (2) "You have listened to music to relax"; (3) "You have meditated or sat still."…”

“…Descriptive statistics were initially used to describe the sociodemographic profiles of all study subjects. CFA and EFA were used to test the applicability of the theoretical model[18][19][20][25][26][27][28].…”

“…According to Park et al [20], alpha brain wave is the most dominant brain wave in adults and the alpha band is extensively studied in the literature. Theta brain wave (4)(5)(6)(7)(8) can be detected in deep relaxation, sleep, and meditation. Delta wave (0-4 Hz) is the slowest and low-frequency band associated with deep sleep and dreamless sleep [21,22].…”

“…If the right amount is consumed, it can positively affect the brain by providing benefits to the people who suffer from chronic stress, bad mood, or anxiety-like symptoms [ 4 ]. Abdullah [ 5 ] reported that gastrointestinal discomforts such as abdominal bloating are common among most populations which can affect their psychological disturbances. The microbiota-gut-brain axis is one of the vastly researched areas in the recent decade.…”

“…The TPB proposes that beliefs (based on attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control) influence intention, which further affects behaviour. Past behaviour can also act an additional predictor of a person's current intention and behaviour (McEachan & Conner, 2011;Thomson, White & Hamilton, 2012;Abdullah et al, 2020). In addition to looking at the effects of past behaviours on current intentions and behaviours, the efficacy of the TPB in predicting health-related behaviours is also influenced by behaviour type, sample characteristics, and methodological factors (McEachan & Conner, 2011).…”
