Validity and Reliability of the Persian Version of the Self-Report Form of Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult version (BRIEF-A)

Abstract: Background: Evaluation of brain function is achieved through patients' behavior. One of the self-regulatory behaviors, impaired in various psychiatric and neurological disorders, is executive function. Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult version (BRIEF-A) is a standard tool for the assessment of executive function. Objectives: Thus, the present study aimed at validating the Persian version of BRIEF-A. Materials and Methods:The study population consisted of 318 employees/students of Shiraz Uni… Show more

“…The internal consistency coefficients for inhibition (0.86), shift (0.99), emotional control (98.9), self-monitoring (0.35), initiation (0.81), working memory (79.9), planning/organization (0.77), task monitoring (0.88), and organization of materials (0.85) were calculated, too [41]. In the context of Iran, Mani et al translated BRIEF-A and examined its psychometric properties [42]. Accordingly, they reported that Cronbach alpha of BRIEF-A subscales ranges between 0.65 and 0.83, and the correlation between subscales was in the range of 0.53 to 0.75 [42].…”

“…Ciszewski et al (2014) and Rouel et al (2016) demonstrated that a two‐factor solution, which distinguishes emotional and behavioral regulation from goal‐oriented and problem‐solving skills, provides an appropriate model fit for clinical populations with disordered eating habits. On the other hand, evidence suggests that a three factor model, which conceptually distinguishes “hot” EF (emotional and motivational processes) from “cool” EF (logical and goal‐oriented processes), demonstrates a good fit in predominately Caucasian, middle‐class adults (e.g., Donders & Strong, 2016; Roth et al, 2013) and university‐affiliated Persian adults (Mani et al, 2018). Together, findings bring into question whether the BRIEF‐A is measuring the same underlying construct of EF across diverse samples and settings, especially for adults experiencing significant socioeconomic hardships.…”

“…Evidence suggests that the BRIEF‐A is a reliable and valid measure of adult EF in clinical (e.g., Ciszewski, Francis, Mendella, Bissada, & Tasca, 2014; Rabin et al, 2006; Rouel, Raman, Hay, & Smith, 2016; Waid‐Ebbs, Wen, Heaton, Donovan, & Velozo, 2012) and nonclinical populations (e.g., Mani et al, 2018; Rabin, Fogel, & Nutter‐Upham, 2011; Roth, Lance, Isquith, Fischer, & Giancola, 2013). However, research has yet to establish reliability and validity of the BRIEF‐A in a community sample of parents experiencing adversity.…”
