Policies and interventions involving the built environment have become a promising opportunity for the promotion of walking as a sustainable transportation mode. Among voluminous literature, few studies were found that examined the association between the built environment and walking among the elderly in China. This study investigated the relationship between the built environment and the walking activity of the elderly based on data collected in Zhongshan Metropolitan Area, China. The results suggest that abundant sidewalks, dense bus stops, easily accessible commercial establishments, and ample green land space are potentially effective to enhance walking among the elderly, albeit to varied degrees. The compact urban form, which is considered as walkability in the western context, may not necessarily play a positive role in Zhongshan's context. The findings provide insights into the policy-making to promote sustainable transportation modes and the design of interventions on health promotion of the elderly in China.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary habits and hip bone health in community-dwelling individuals with chronic stroke. The usual dietary intake of 94 individuals with chronic stroke (30 women, mean age: 59.0 years) was assessed by a 3-day food record within a single week. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure bone mineral density (BMD) at both hips. The results showed that low hip bone mass was found in 59 and 50 of the participants on the affected and unaffected side, respectively. The mean hip BMD was also significantly lower on the affected side than the unaffected side (P < 0.001). The intake of total fat, carbohydrates, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, fiber, folic acid, vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6, C, and K was significantly lower than the respective recommended daily intake values (P < 0.05). Multiple regression analyses revealed that after adjusting for the effects of age, sex, body mass index, post-stroke duration, side of paresis, motor impairment, physical activity level, walking endurance, total calories intake, and total number of medications, intake of protein, fiber, and magnesium remained significantly associated with hip T score on the affected side, accounting for 4.2, 4.4, and 3.2% of the variance, respectively. On the other hand, intake of protein and fiber was independently associated with hip T score on the unaffected side, explaining 2.7 and 5.2% of the variance, respectively. The results highlighted the potential relevance of diet modification in maintaining bone health post stroke, which would require further study.

Background: Evaluation of frailty in older people requires assessment of their physical activity level. The Korean version of the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (K-PASE) questionnaire is more comprehensive, yet it can be time-consuming and costly to administer on a large scale. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) short form, which is simpler and free of charge, may replace the K-PASE for defining the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) frailty phenotype. Methods: We analyzed data from 160 community-dwelling older adults (mean age: 75 years) who were administered both the K-PASE and IPAQ short form questionnaires as part of the assessments in the Aging Study of Pyeongchang Rural Area. We compared agreements between the 2 physical activity questionnaires and between the CHS frailty phenotype defined using the K-PASE and IPAQ short form. Correlations between each CHS frailty phenotype definition and common geriatric syndromes were assessed. Results: The physical activity level measured using the K-PASE correlated modestly with the level measured using the IPAQ short form (correlation coefficient, 0.250; p=0.001). However, the agreement was substantially higher between the CHS frailty phenotype based on the K-PASE and the definition based on the IPAQ short form (Cohen kappa, 0.625; p<0.001). Both frailty phenotype definitions were positively correlated with most geriatric conditions. Conclusion: The simpler IPAQ short form may replace the more comprehensive K-PASE for assessing CHS frailty phenotype in older people. Our results should inform frailty assessment in research and clinical care settings.
