Validity and reliability of the revised convergence insufficiency symptom survey in adults

Abstract: Adults with symptomatic CI had a significantly higher CISS score than adults with NBV. The results of the study demonstrate that the CISS is a valid and reliable instrument that can be used clinically or as an outcome measure for research studies of adults with CI.

“…This finding adds to the debate in the literature as to the suitability of self-reported scales such as the Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS) to identify those with CI (Rouse et al, 2004). A possible reason there was no correlation between the survey and RAF Rule values in this cohort could be due to NP patients already experiencing a vast majority of visual symptoms present on the CISS.…”

“…Furthermore, the BVA2 includes the 15-question Convergence Insufficiency Symptoms Survey (CISS). This questionnaire has been validated and standardized for the randomized clinical trials (Convergence Insufficiency Treatment Trial Study Group) to subjectively measure the recovery of near vision symptoms in adults [27][28]41]. Each symptom question had five possible answers with an associated value, where 4 = always, 3 = frequently, 2 = sometimes, 1 = rarely, and 0 = never.…”
