Validity and reliability of a pediatric patient classification instrument

Abstract: OBJECTIVES: to assess the construct validity and reliability of the Pediatric Patient Classification Instrument. METHODS: correlation study developed at a teaching hospital. The classification involved 227 patients, using the pediatric patient classification instrument. The construct validity was assessed through the factor analysis approach and reliability through internal consistency. RESULTS: the Exploratory Factor Analysis identified three constructs with 67.5% of variance explanation and, in the reliabili… Show more

“…Given this context, studies highlight the importance of reliability as to the uniformity of each item of a scale, measured by the consistency of the evaluators' responses. These findings corroborate the results of this research (17)(18)(19) . A study carried out to validate a surgical safety checklist emphasized the reliability of a validated instrument as something that contributes with the professional in all areas of knowledge, allowing the recognition of avoidable risk situations, educational actions, and valuing the management to whom it is intended.…”

“…The validity is present when it measures, in fact, what is proposed to be measured in relation to a particular phenomenon investigated. Reliability is the instrument's ability to present accurate measures to reality (13) . Validity is a research process that starts with the construction and persists during the development stages, enforcement, correction and interpretation of results.…”

“…Validity is a research process that starts with the construction and persists during the development stages, enforcement, correction and interpretation of results. The interpretation of the validity of a test sometimes also requires the calculation of different coefficients (13)(14)(15) . The present study design followed three steps:…”
