Validation of ZnO Surge Arresters Model for Overvoltage Studies

Abstract: This paper presents an improvement of the procedure to determine the parameters of the simplified model for metal-oxide surge arresters, derived from the IEEE standard model. The main innovation introduced by the paper lays in the possibility to define an approximate dynamic model even if data about residual voltages for steep current pulse are not defined in the manufacturer's data sheets. This model has a wide rangeability and its effectiveness is good for both medium-and high-voltage arresters. The effectiv… Show more

“…The analysis of papers [1,2,[4][5][6][7][8][9][10] published in dif ferent years shows that basically when comparing dif ferent models of metal oxide surge arresters, the above approach with a series connection of the current source and the surge arrester model is used. In most cases, the residual voltage is determined when model is exposed to lightning current impulses, as well as a steep current impulse.…”

“…In most cases, the residual voltage is determined when model is exposed to lightning current impulses, as well as a steep current impulse. Thus, in [2,5,[7][8][9][10], lightning current impulses and steep current impulses were used. In [1,4,6], in ad dition, switching current impulses were used to determine the residual voltage.…”

“…The two resistances in parallel with the inductances are replaced by one resistance to avoid numerical troubles. The values for L 0 and L 1 are presented in table 1 [5]. The parameters of each model are computed using the electrical characteristic data, obtained from the manufacturersʼ datasheet.…”

“…The parameters of each model are computed using the electrical characteristic data, obtained from the manufacturersʼ datasheet. The equations for the parameter computations of the IEEE and Pinceti models are presented in table 1 [4,5]. Table 2 and 3 present the electrical and physical characteristic data for the examined surge arrester.…”
