Validation of two major quantitative trait loci for fusarium head blight resistance in Chinese wheat line W14

Abstract: Identity of quantitative trait loci (QTL) governing resistance to fusarium head blight (FHB) initial infection (type I), spread (type II), kernel infection, and deoxynivalenol (DON) accumulation was characterized in Chinese wheat line W14. Ninety-six double-haploid lines derived from a cross of W14 · ÕPion2684Õ were evaluated for FHB resistance in two greenhouse and one field experiment. Two known major QTL were validated on chromosomes 3BS and 5AS in W14 using the composite interval mapping method. The 3BS QT… Show more

“…For example, QTLs conditioning low DON content on chromosomes 3BS and 5AS Chen et al 2006;Ma et al 2006) had common intervals with QFdk.nau-3B and QFdk.nau-5A. This is probably why FDK is correlated with DON content (Bai et al 2001;Paul et al 2005).…”

“…At present, several genes related to DON resistance have been isolated from various plants, such as acetyltransferase in wheat [9] , the ribosomal protein L3 (RPL3) gene in rice [10] and wheat [11] , the DOGT1 gene of the UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) family in A. thaliana [12] , and the PDR type ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter in Saccharomyces cerevisiae [12,13] . In wheat, FHB1, a major QTL of FHB resistance and DON resistance in chromosome arm 3BS has been identified [14][15][16][17] , and it probably encodes or regulates DON detoxification proteins [18] . In order to better understand molecular mechanisms of FHB or DON resistance, it is critical to identify new genes that are expressed closely upon DON treatment, because the inheritance of FHB resistance and DON resistance is a complicated quantitative trait and mechanisms under FHB resistance have not yet been clarified.…”

“…Several quantitative trait loci (QTLs) are associated with type I resistance in recombinant inbred lines (RILs) and doubled haploid lines (DHLs) (Chen et al 2006, Gilsinger et al 2005, Lin et al 2006, Steed et al 2005, Steiner et al 2004, Yang et al 2005, Yu et al 2008; reviewed by Buerstmayr et al 2009, Liu et al 2009. Since this type of resistance is more difficult to assess, less is known about it than other types (Buerstmayr et al 2009); for example, the mechanism of type I resistance is not clear (Wagacha and Muthomi 2007).…”
