Validation of the Turkish version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale among women within their first postpartum year

Abstract: It was concluded that: (1) values for the validity were respectable, but not excellent; (2) the scale needs to be improved for use in the Turkish population; and (3) the high prevalence of postnatal depression found in this study may be a function of the low validity of the test.

“…EPDS validations seemed to work well in some cultures, e.g. the UK (Murray and Cox, 1990), Lithuania (Bunevicius et al, 2009), Malta (Felice et al, 2006), or Nigeria (Adewuya et al, 2006), while not so well in some others, such as Thailand (Pitanupong et al, 2007) or Turkey (Aydin et al, 2004). Even if we consider our translation as more or less conveying the same meaning as the original questionnaire, cultural differences (differences in illness behaviour, etc.)…”

“…The increasing number of validation studies in various languages and cultural contexts (Aydin et al, 2004) may highlight the need for modifying or adding further items. The psychometric properties of the EPDS in a previous, postpartum validation study (Nagy et al, 2011) in a Hungarian sample also appeared to be acceptable but not excellent, suggesting the same.…”
