Introduction The increase in the migrant population in Spain has transformed the cultural profile of public health care users. The purpose of this study is to recognize the subtle and blatant prejudices nursing students have toward migrant patients. Method An ex post facto descriptive study, using a transversal design ( N = 1,393). Results Males showed a higher degree of prejudice ( p < .05). Students in their first year have more subtle prejudices than those in their fourth year ( p < .005). Blatant prejudice increases from the first year to the fourth year of the degree program ( p < .05). Regarding context, there were differences found between subtle and blatant prejudice (both, p < .05), as students in areas with high migratory pressure showed more prejudiced attitudes toward migrant patients. Discussion Students display subtle prejudices, which is why education in culturally congruent health care must be integrated across all levels of nursing education, with the objective of diminishing prejudice against the migrant population.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Conocer si los estudiantes de enfermería poseen prejuicios sutiles y manifiestos hacia los migrantes. Método: Se realizó un estudio Ex-Post-Facto de tipo descriptivo. Las variables de estudio fueran: sexo, procedencia cultural, edad, curso y tener contacto con migrantes. Se utilizó la Escala de Prejuicio Sutil y Manifiesto. Se realizaron análisis descriptivos e inferenciales. Resultados: Participaron 282 estudiantes. Existen diferencias significativas en la variable cultura, siendo los estudiantes de procedencia bereber, de religión musulmana, menos prejuiciosos que los de procedencia europea, de religión cristiana. Los alumnos de cuarto, son los que más prejuicios manifiestos poseen. Según la variable haber tenido contacto con migrantes, son los estudiantes que no han tenido contacto con este colectivo los que tienen mayores prejuicios manifiestos. Conclusión: Los estudiantes de enfermería poseen cierta carga de prejuicios sutiles más que de prejuicios manifiestos hacia la población migrante.

Framing COVID-19 as an Existential Threat Predicts Anxious Arousal and Prejudice towards Chinese People

We tested the hypothesis that perceived existential threat of COVID-19 elicits anxious arousal, which can manifest in prejudice toward the perceived source of the threat (Chinese people). Americans (n = 474) were randomly assigned to an experimental condition in which COVID-19 was framed as an existential threat to the United States or a non-existential threat control condition. They then completed self-report measures of anxious arousal and blatant prejudice towards Chinese people. As expected, participants in the threat (vs. control) condition reported greater anxious arousal which, in turn, predicted greater blatant prejudice. Threat (vs. control) condition also indirectly predicted greater prejudice via greater anxious arousal. Results suggest that COVID-19 existential threat may diminish social capital, which would further degrade people’s health and well-being.
