Validation of the STOP-Bang Questionnaire as a Screening Tool for Obstructive Sleep Apnea among Different Populations: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: BackgroundDiagnosing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is clinically relevant because untreated OSA has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The STOP-Bang questionnaire is a validated screening tool for OSA. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the effectiveness of STOP-Bang for screening patients suspected of having OSA and to predict its accuracy in determining the severity of OSA in the different populations.MethodsA search of the literature databases was performed.… Show more

“…In comparison, the STOP-Bang questionnaire, 18 which is another tool designed to predict OSA, consists of four simple yes/no questions related to snoring, tiredness, observed apneas, and high blood pressure and four demographic queries that include BMI, age, neck circumference, and sex. A recent meta-analysis looking at the STOP-Bang questionnaire in various populations found that the diagnostic properties of STOPBang were generally consistent with high sensitivities and low specificities, 19 which is in contrast to the large variation reported in different studies looking at the predictive accuracy of the Berlin questionnaire.…”

“…23 The STOP-BANG questionnaire has been validated among different populations, including Chinese, with a high sensitivity (91%-94%) to detect OSA. 24 There were 9,311 participants (78%) who completed the STOP-BANG questionnaire. We used multiple imputation for these missing values based on a fully conditional method that has been described.…”

“…Intermediate or high risk of OSA was defined as three or more of the eight items scored positive 21. Previous validation studies among different populations, including Chinese, showed a high sensitivity (91–94%) to detect OSA 22. In this study, 2280 participants were considered intermediate or high risk of OSA (STOPBANG score ≥ 3) 21…”
