Validation of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire: an online version

Abstract: The brief one-factor model was the only one among the alternate models that provided good fit to the data. The brief model is promising for use in research and has good practical application because the model was satisfactorily tested in terms of internal consistency, ability to discriminate between genders, and good association with other measures of similar constructs. By validating an online version of the EDE-Q using a university sample with a cultural background different from Western culture, the present… Show more

“…This is in line with our own findings, producing unacceptable fit indices for EDE-Q data collected from omnivores. The alternative three-, two-, and full one-factor model have previously shown to provide inadequate fit as well (Allen et al, 2011;Barnes et al, 2012;Chan et al, 2014). This is also in line with our findings, with poor fit for the three-, two-, and full one-factor model in the omnivores.…”

“…Four studies, surveying male and female athletes and non-athletes, Latina women, bariatric surgery patients, and schoolchildren reported indices of model fit in the acceptable range for the fourfactor model (Darcy et al, 2013;Franko et al, 2012;Hrabosky et al, 2008;Penelo et al, 2013). Confirmatory factor analyses of EDE-Q data from eating disordered, community, obese, undergraduate, adolescent, and bariatric surgery patient samples suggest unacceptable fit of the data with the original four-factor model (Allen et al, 2011;Barnes et al, 2012 ;Chan et al, 2014 ;Grilo et al, 2013Grilo et al, , 2015White et al, 2014).…”

“…An EFA on an adult clinical Portuguese sample found three factors, roughly representing Shape/Weight concern, Restraint, and Eating concern [13]. Other studies that were unable to support the four-factor structure in adults, have found support for a single factor or a briefer questionnaire in relation to bariatric surgery candidates [14], Chinese and US students [15, 16], as well as Italian in- and outpatients [17]. This broad spectrum of factor analytic findings is a problem, and shows consistency only in not replicating the purported structure of the instrument.…”

“…Participants then completed the Eating Disorder Examination -Questionnaire Version 43 and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales 44 online in their own time between the screening and the first experiment visits. Both questionnaires have been validated for online application 45,46 . The experimental visits were conducted two days apart, ensuring participants were tested in the same phase of the oestrous cycle for both treatment conditions (OT, placebo).…”
