Validation of the Caregiver Skills (CASK) scale in Catalonia: Concordance between caregivers in attitudes and behaviours

Abstract: The CASK is a valid tool to assess ED-related attitudes in Spanish-speaking caregivers. Furthermore, caregivers and patients alike could stand to benefit from interventions focused on improving areas such as ED beliefs, effective communication, quality of life, and emotional distancing.

“…A systematic review on caregivers of patients also reported high anxiety and depression levels in this population (Anastasiadou, Medina‐Pradas, Sepulveda, & Treasure, 2014). This suggests that whether it is during a pandemic or non‐pandemic period, the distress of caregivers of patients with ED is a persistent issue that should attract extra attention (Vintró‐Alcaraz et al, 2018). Our study further showed that caregivers of patients with ED got less social support.…”

“…Studies have shown that parents or caregivers of patients with ED are under various pressures, both psychologically and economically (Hillege, Beale, & McMaster, 2006; Zabala, Macdonald, & Treasure, 2009). Caregivers of ED patients have explicitly expressed their need for more practical and emotional support (Vintró‐Alcaraz et al, 2018). During the COVID‐19 pandemic, the primary problem that families of people diagnosed with an eating disorder met is limited access to medical resources, including difficulties in going to hospitals, getting medication, and maintaining treatment as before, especially for out‐patients.…”

“…The time available for engaging in potentially addictive behaviours, such as online gambling, gaming, and pornography (Håkansson, Fernández‐Aranda, Menchón, Potenza, & Jiménez‐Murcia, 2020; Király et al, 2020; Mestre‐Bach, Blycker, & Potenza, 2020) has increased and these behaviours, along with the use of alcohol or other substances, may be used as coping strategies to avoid negative emotional states (Håkansson et al, 2020; King, Delfabbro, Billieux, & Potenza, 2020; Király et al, 2020; Sun et al, 2020). Although these behaviours do not constitute a risk for all individuals, the current situation may increase the risk for onset, maintenance, and relapse, especially for the most vulnerable individuals (Columb, Hussain, & O'Gara, 2020; Marsden et al, 2020), such as patients with an eating disorders and patients with obesity (Baenas et al, 2020; Graell et al, 2020; Cornejo‐Pareja et al, 2020), as well as patients with less favourable family environments (Vintró‐Alcaraz et al, 2018).…”

“…However, with a total mean score of 68.04 (of a maximum of 100), caregivers' self‐rated skills levels prior to the start of a specific intervention were in the upper range of all possible scores. In practical‐clinical terms, this score can be interpreted as a high skills level (Vintró‐Alcaraz et al., 2018). This average score was slightly higher than in a study in the United Kingdom (Hibbs et al., 2015c) and comparable with a sample of caregivers in Spain (Vintró‐Alcaraz et al., 2018).…”

“…The authors also reported reasonable convergent validity of the CASK with other measures of caregiver distress, anxiety and expressed emotion. Recently, the 6-factor structure of the original version was confirmed in a Spanish translation of the CASK with no differences in the CASK scores between mothers and fathers of patients with any kind of EDs (Vintró-Alcaraz et al, 2018).…”
