“…A validated tool in pediatric concussion that encourages integration of the SLP early in treatment does not exist. Recent research has assessed cognitive changes with a standardized pediatric tool, 21 yet it is a sideline cognitive assessment tool and not directly addressing when to refer to SLP. We were not able to extract the data to note objective improved recovery; however, the literature demonstrates that early education regarding symptoms, and expected progression, provision of reassurance, and normalization of symptoms and compensatory strategies that target the current symptoms lead to improved outcomes 22 .…”

“…Addressing concerns and limitations of ceiling effects, the SCAT5/Child-SCAT5 introduced a 10-item word list as an alternative to its traditional five-item word list [5,7]. Although the 10-item word list has shown to be a valid measure of memory in children with concussion [18], and studies among collegiate athletes have demonstrated that it eliminates the ceiling effect criticized on the five-word list on the SCAT5 [19], the ability for the immediate memory component to accurately differentiate between concussed and non-concussed youth was not demonstrated in this study. Further, while the delayed recall component of the SAC/SAC-C word lists demonstrated a statistically significant difference between groups, it did not meet an acceptable level of between-group discrimination on ROC curve analyses.…”

“…The fifth version of the Sports Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT5) combines symptom, orientation, memory, concentration and balance with clinical neurological examination for assessment of sports mTBI 68. Recent investigation into its use in non-athletes showed success in distinguishing concussed from control patients69 70 and in Wales, a recent clinical improvement project adapted the SCAT for EDs by removing the sporting reference ‘Maddock’s questions’ and signs at time of injury. The ‘ED-CAT’ project demonstrated that the SCAT system for public healthcare patients in ED is feasible 71…”
