Validation of the Offending-Related Attitudes Questionnaire of CRIME-PICS II Scale (Chinese)

Abstract: This study examined the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the first part of the Chinese version of the CRIME-PICS II Scale, a self-administrated instrument assessing offending-related attitudes. “…The CRIME-PICS II questionnaire was used for the third part of the survey (Frude, Honess, & Maguire, 2009). It was used to assess the respondents' attitudes toward delinquency and criminal acts (Chui & Chan, 2011;Chui, Wu, Kwok, & Liu, 2017). The original instrument is divided into four parts: The first part covers an offender's current status, history of past offending, and demographic characteristics; the second part is the 20-item CRIME-PICS II questionnaire; the third part is the 15-item problems checklist; and the fourth part is a summary of the offender's scores from the questionnaires.…”

“…To date, Chinese researchers have used a range of methods to develop local scale/instruments for practice. A few of them developed their own Chinese instruments using an entirely “bottom-up” approach (Bola, Chan, Chen, & Ng, 2016), but most have translated, adapted, and validated English scales (Chui, Wu, Kwok, & Liu, 2016; Kwok, Gu, & Kit, 2016; Leung, Tsang, & Lo, 2015; Leung, Tsang, Ng, & Choi, 2016; Pan, Ng, Young, & Caroline, 2016; Tang, Duan, Wang, & Liu, 2014; Wang et al, 2015; Wong, Lau, Kwok, Wong, & Tori, 2015; Young, Ng, Pan, & Cheng, 2015). It has been empirically determined that for successful cultural adaptation of instruments, it is essential that the meanings of instruments and their items in different cultures or languages are equivalent to each other.…”
