Validation of the NPI-Q, a Brief Clinical Form of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory

Abstract: The Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) is a validated clinical instrument for evaluating psychopathology in dementia. The authors developed a brief questionnaire form of the NPI (NPI-Q), intended for use in routine clinical practice, and cross-validated it with the NPI in 60 Alzheimer's patients. Test-retest reliability of the NPI-Q was acceptable. The prevalence of analogous symptoms reported on the NPI and NPI-Q differed on average by 5%; moderate or severe symptom ratings differed by less than 2%. The NPI-Q p… Show more

“…The NPI-NH has high interrater reliability and has been found to be a valid instrument for the assessment of a wide range of NPS in dementia (Kat et al, 2002;Kaufer et al, 2000). The NPI-NH consists of ten neuropsychiatric symptoms (delusions, hallucinations, agitation/ aggression, depression, anxiety, euphoria/elation, apathy/ indifference, disinhibition, irritability/lability, aberrant motor behavior) and two neurovegetative symptoms (nighttime behavior disturbances and appetite/eating disturbances).…”

“…18 The Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Questionnaire (NPI-Q) was designed to expand the applicability of the NPI to routine clinical settings. 17 Another version was designed specifically for nursing home use. The NPI-Q was crossvalidated with the NPI in 60 Alzheimer's patients.…”

“…The NPI-Q was crossvalidated with the NPI in 60 Alzheimer's patients. 17 The NPI-Q is a brief, informant-based, 2-page, selfadministered assessment of neuropsychiatric symptoms and associated caregiver distress (see Appendix 1). Written instructions are provided to the caregiver who then uses anchor points to rate symptom severity and caregiver distress.…”

“…The NPI and NPI-Q measure twelve behavioral domains including depression, apathy, irritability, agitation, anxiety, disinhibition, delusions, aberrant motor behavior, euphoria, hallucinations, night-time behaviors, and appetite/eating change. Both NPI and NPI-Q have been shown to be reliable and valid scales 17, 18 .…”
