Validation of the new venous severity scoring system in varicose vein surgery

Abstract: Venous severity scores are significantly higher in advanced venous disease, demonstrating correlation with anatomic extent. Both venous clinical severity scores, VCSS and CEAP clinical score, are equally sensitive and significantly better for measuring changes in response to superficial venous surgery than is the already in use CEAP clinical class. VDS demonstrated comparable and even better performance. Although the assignment of CEAP clinical class might be adequate for daily clinical purposes, venous severi… Show more

“…18 To complement the CEAP classification and further define the severity of CVI, a venous clinical severity score was developed. 44,45 The revised venous clinical severity score provides clarification of the terms and better definition of the descriptors and has further clinical applicability (Table 2). 46 The venous clinical severity score consists of 10 attributes with 4 grades (absent, mild, moderate, and severe).…”

“…It has been shown to be useful in evaluation of the response to treatment in CVD and is recommended for routine clinical use in the CPG (grade 1B). 18,45 To better evaluate patient-perceived success, severity of disease, and treatment outcome in CVI, the use of validated disease-specific quality-of-life questionnaires is also encouraged by the CPG (grade 1B).…”

“…VCSS was designed to provide a method for serial assessment and to give additional weight to more severe manifestations of chronic venous disease [21]. Although the usefulness of the original VCSS has been clearly demonstrated [22], several areas of deficiency have also been noted [23][24]. The revised VCSS (used in this study) addresses certain ambiguity in clinical descriptors, while preserving its strengths of thorough yet simple symptom evaluation.…”
