Validation of the muscularity‐oriented eating test in adult women in China

Abstract: Objective Research on muscularity‐oriented disordered eating has grown in recent years. However, the bulk of this research has focused on men and Western populations. Limited research is available in non‐Western populations of women (e.g., China) which is likely due to the lack of valid instruments in these populations. Thus, the current study aimed to describe the validity and reliability of the Muscularity‐Oriented Eating Test (MOET) in Chinese women. Method Two online surveys (survey one: n = 599, Mage = 29… Show more

“…Finally, the present conclusions are bound to thinness-oriented body dissatisfaction and disordered eating and do not speak to muscularity-related dimensions of these constructs (e.g., muscularityoriented body dissatisfaction and disordered eating; Cunningham et al, 2021;He, Cui, et al, 2023;He, Murray, et al, 2021;McCreary & Sasse, 2000;Murray et al, 2019;Rodgers et al, 2018;Tang et al, 2022). Future research is needed to test these research questions in relation to muscularity-oriented body dissatisfaction and disordered eating in Chinese transgender adults.…”

“…The Chinese version of the 15‐item Muscularity‐Oriented Eating Test (MOET; He et al, 2023; He, Murray, et al, 2021; Murray et al, 2019) was used to examine muscularity‐oriented disordered eating. Items are rated on a 5‐point Likert scale (0 = never true , 4 = always true ).…”

“…The Chinese version of the 15‐item Muscularity‐Oriented Eating Test (MOET; He et al, 2023; He, Murray, et al, 2021; Murray et al, 2019) was used to assess muscularity‐oriented disordered eating (e.g., rigid diet rules, strict exercise routines, and use of supplements for enhancing muscularity). The items are rated on a 5‐point Likert scale, from 0 “never true” to 4 “always true.” A total score can be computed by averaging the items, with higher scores suggesting higher muscularity‐oriented disordered eating.…”

“…The items are rated on a 5‐point Likert scale, from 0 “never true” to 4 “always true.” A total score can be computed by averaging the items, with higher scores suggesting higher muscularity‐oriented disordered eating. The MOET showed good psychometric properties in Chinese adult men and women (He et al, 2023; He, Murray, et al, 2021). In the present study, the McDonald's ω values of the MOET were .91 and .89 for men and women, respectively.…”
