Validation of the Modified American Urological Association Symptom Score

Abstract: This study validates that the UWIN questionnaire can be used in place of the American Urological Association symptom score. The UWIN questionnaire will lessen the burden on the respondent, broaden the applicability of the instrument and make collecting data as efficient and effective as possible.

“…After the score was derived, it was validated in the prostate cancer awareness week 2006-2007 and then later in the clinical setting as well. 7,8 UWIN omits frequency, which was one of the most misunderstood questions, but retains urgency due to its high correlation to bother. 4 We found a good linear relationship between AUA-SI and UWIN.…”

“…This scoring system was derived from statistical analysis of 8731 AUASI scores collected during Prostate Cancer awareness week in 2003/2004 and after correlation analysis and applying area under curve (AUC) to determine the best reduced index and cut off points in severity for mild, moderate and severe categories . The UWIN score thus developed was validated by the same group in subsequent publications . This study was undertaken to compare the UWIN score with the existing gold standard AUASI for symptom severity assessment in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) related LUTS at our institution.…”

“…However, there is a paucity of literature evaluating new tools. Crawford et al 14 validated a shorter version of the IPSS called the UWIN (urgency, weak stream, incomplete emptying, and nocturia), but it does not address the problem of poor literacy. Ushijima et al 15 evaluated a novel visual analog scale questionnaire to the IPSS in Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine (Kyoto, Japan).…”

“…The IPSS is the most used questionnaire for the evaluation of LUTS in men, but subjects with low education level have been shown to have difficulties in completing it accurately (Johnson et al 2008) (Barry et al 1992). Following the original publications describing the development (Barqawi et al 2011) and validation (Crawford et al 2011) of the UWIN, other studies used the simplified tool to evaluate its validity and applicability compared to the IPSS (Eid et al 2014;Mallya et al 2017;Ramaraju et al 2016). The UWIN provide results comparable to the IPSS while using a more straightforward format and taking less time to complete and needing lesser assistance even when completed by subjects with lower educational status.…”
