Validation of the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire for self-administration in a European context

Abstract: Background/aimLittle is known about the measurement properties of the self-administered Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) in Europe. The aim was to validate the self-administered GPAQ against accelerometry in Switzerland in German, French and Italian.MethodsParticipants of this cross-sectional study were recruited among members of the Swiss Food Panel (German-speaking and French-speaking samples) and as a convenience sample (Italian-speaking sample). They completed the GPAQ and wore an Actigraph GT… Show more

“…Health-related quality of life was measured using the Short-Form 12 (SF-12), whose final score ranges from 17 (worst quality of life) to 55 (best quality of life) [24,25]. Dietary knowledge and behavior were assessed by a questionnaire built by the research team (Table 1): each correct answer counting for one point toward the total score.…”

“…Esta limitación es típica de los cuestionarios como el GPAQ, en donde se tiende a sobreestimar los niveles de actividad física. Solo con nuevos estudios, ya sea con podómetros o acelerómetros podrán ser ajustados y reinterpretados estos valores (25)(26)(27).…”

“…The GPAQ that was developed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) (Armstrong & Bull 2006;Bull et al 2009), captures PA data across three activity domains (i.e., work, recreation or travel) and is substantially shorter than the IPAQ long form (Wanner et al 2017). The first version of the GPAQ (GPAQv1) had 19 questions.…”

“…The overall cost involved in using an interviewer administered face-to-face protocol may not be feasible where studies have limited resources such as this. Moreover, a face-to-face protocol may not be time efficient (Wanner et al 2017). For example, with a face-to-face protocol, participants are required to meet and interview individually, which may be highly time consuming (Oltmann 2016).…”
