Validation of the BodyGem™ hand-held calorimeter

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To assess the validity and reliability of a hand-held indirect calorimeter. DESIGN: Resting metabolic rate (RMR) was measured on two separate mornings. SUBJECTS: A heterogeneous sample of 41 healthy adults. MEASUREMENTS: RMR using both a metabolic cart (Sensormedics 2900, SM-2900) and a hand-held indirect calorimeter (BodyGemt, BG). RESULTS: There were no trial-to-trial differences in RMR measured by the BG (67567163 vs 66977163 kJ/day) or the SM-2900 (64007163 vs 63967167 kJ/day). RMR measured by th… Show more

“…Melanson et al (20) The results of Compher et al (6) widened the mean RMR difference between the Gem and reference system from -10.2% to -15.1%. Because of this adjustment, the Gem device did not perform comparably to the reference system.…”

“…Results from the search yielded 12 published studies: 8 on the MedGem (1, 6, 9, 14, 22, 27, 30, 31), 3 on the BodyGem (18,20,23), and 1 on the HealtheTech (28). Next, a search was conducted for abstract presentations for the MedGem and BodyGem device.…”

“…12 rested in a seated quiet room for 5-10 minutes prior to measurement. This system has been validated against a metabolic cart in healthy normal weight individuals and higher accuracy than using Harris-Benedict prediction equations for RMR [18]. Participants were seated in a quiet room and had not participated in any strenuous exercise for at least 24-hours prior to measurement.…”

“…Resting energy expenditure was measured using the BodyGem handheld indirect calorimeter (model 200-0001-01; HealtheTech, Golden, CO, USA), validated against other techniques (Melanson et al, 2004;Compher et al, 2005;Rubenbauer et al, 2006). Fasted blood samples were drawn by trained professionals and sent to a quality-assured pathology laboratory (Southern IML Pathology, Wollongong, Australia).…”
