“…They suggest that both women and men who report high levels of body appreciation intentionally change or shape their social environment in favor of others who are body positive and communicate unconditional body acceptance. However, contrary to prior findings ( Andrew et al, 2016b ; J. Wang et al, 2022 ) and in contrast to the assumption of the acceptance model of intuitive eating ( Avalos & Tylka, 2006 ), we did not observe a significant path from perceived body acceptance by others to body appreciation. There are several potential explanations for the lack of significance.…”

“…The acceptance model of intuitive eating has been cross-sectionally confirmed in various demographic groups, including adolescent girls ( Andrew et al, 2015 ), emerging adult, young adult, and middle adult women ( Augustus-Horvath & Tylka, 2011 ), college women athletes ( Oh et al, 2012 ), physically active college women and men ( Tylka & Homan, 2015 ), and has shown to be invariant across Black, Hispanic, and White women ( Modica & DiLillo, 2023 ). Moreover, several correlational studies observed that perceived body acceptance by others was consistently positively associated with multiple facets of positive body image constructs, such as body appreciation and body pride, subjective happiness, emotional well-being, and intuitive eating, as well as negatively linked to social comparison, weight bias internalization, and perceived appearance-related pressure ( Andrew et al, 2014 , Andrew et al, 2016aa , Augustus-Horvath and Tylka, 2011 , Swami et al, 2021 , Swami et al, 2021 , Swami et al, 2018 ; J. Wang et al, 2022 ). However, empirical work investigating prospective associations between perceived body acceptance by others and body appreciation is scarce.…”

“…Higher average scores of the FAS indicate higher levels of functionality appreciation. The present study used the Chinese version of the FAS which showed sound psychometric properties (e.g., high internal consistency reliability and good convergent validity) in Chinese adults [50,51]. The FAS had Cronbach's α values of .77 and .78 for women and men in the present study.…”
