Validation of the Abrahamic Forms of the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS-5, CRS-10, and CRS-15): Evidence from Selected University Students in the Philippines

Abstract: The Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS) is an instrument that measures the centrality, importance, or salience of religious meanings in personality. Addressing the dearth of research on the salience of religion among Filipino Christian youths, the researchers explore in this paper the degree of religiosity of selected university students and the relevance of religious beliefs in their daily life by validating the Abrahamic forms of the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS-5, CRS-10, and CRS-15). “…It was suggested that the contradicting findings on religion and well-being could be attributed to differences in the perceived closeness to the Divine [ 16 ], the lack of required minimum sample size [ 15 ], or the method used (e.g., Duke University Religion Index did not measure religious coping), together with the fact that most previous studies tend to focus only on religiosity [ 11 , 31 ], particularly extrinsic religiosity [ 76 , 77 ] and intrinsic religiosity [ 78 ], leaving much to investigate. However, it should be noted that religion can encompass many parameters that are not necessarily coupled tightly.…”

“…With contradicting findings on religion and well-being attributed to differences in the perceived closeness to the Divine (Malinakova et al, 2020), the lack of required sample size (Farag & Behzadi, 2018), or the method used (e.g. Duke University Religion Index did not measure religious coping) together with the fact that most previous studies tend to focus only on religiosity (Dilmaghani, 2018;Murken, 2004) based on extrinsic religiosity (del Castillo et al, 2020;del Castillo et al, 2021) and intrinsic religiosity (Koenig & Büssing, 2010), the type of beliefs of the supernatural, e.g. a personal relatable God vs an impersonal natural force were not investigated, much less with exercise as a confounding variable.…”
